A new species to science was discovered earlier this year on Shotover. A scarce fungus Vulvariella bombycina has appeared on Shotover two years running and it was noted that it frequently played host to many small flies on its cap. The flies were later discovered to be a new species to science (currently un-named).
The four specimens from Shotover, along with eleven others from around the country, will be used in the identification and naming process.
